... Heat advisory in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening...

The National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston has issued a
heat advisory... which is in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening.

Unusually hot conditions expected today. Afternoon heat indicies
from 102 to 107 degrees will be common across the area throughout
the afternoon and some areas may reach the 108 to 109 mark.

This advisory may be extended for tomorrow as the strong ridge of
high pressure remains in place.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

If you plan to be outside... avoid prolonged exposure or strenuous
physical activity. Your body can lose up to a gallon of water an
hour through perspiration. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid
dehydration. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages can increase the
rate of water loss in your body... increasing the risk of heat
exhaustion or stroke. Wear lightweight... light-colored... loose-
fitting clothing. Wear a hat to shield yourself from the sun...
and use a sunscreen to reduce possible sunburn.

... Near record high temperatures expected over the Holiday weekend...

Hot afternoons are in store for southeast Texas over the Fourth of
July weekend as strong upper level high pressure builds across the
area. Afternoon high temperatures each day will be near or above record
levels at many locations. Heat index values will peak in a 102 to 107
range with a few spots equaling or exceeding 108. A heat advisory
might be needed.

Those venturing outside both today and on Sunday should prepare themselves
for the intense heat. Use light weight and light colored clothing. Try
to avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest time of the day.
Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Make sure indoor locations
are properly air conditioned. Make sure both the Young and the elderly
are safe... and that the pets have shade and plenty of water.

Heat relief is expected to come next week. The strong upper level high
pressure system will weaken and drift westward. Both decreasing afternoon
high temperatures and increasing rain chances can be expected.
